Teacher Training

Karen Lavie was for more than 20 years teacher trainer and examiner for the NZSI (New Zealand Suzuki Institute). Since 2014 she has been teacher trainer for the European Suzuki Association, giving courses for flute teachers who feel that they would like to approach their teaching in a more holistic way.

Suzuki’s philosophy is based on respect for each individual child. Talent is not a given, but is something to be developed. There is emphasis on tone production from the very start and child- appropriate exercises for a relaxed embouchure play a central role. Technique is ingenuously structured in clearly defined building blocks that make practice both effective and fun. The founder of the Suzuki Method for flute is Toshio Takahashi who was one of the last students of Marcel Moyse. The flute method was developed in close collaboration with Dr. Suzuki.

Training courses follow the syllabus of the European Suzuki Association (ESA). There are five levels. On the ESA website you find all information on the course structure. Every level consists of 4-6 training sessions of 2-4 days each, usually held during weekends or school holidays. Every level is concluded with an exam.

After completing Level 1 you can register as an ESA Suzuki Flute teacher.
